Stephen Satterfield
Stephen was born and raised in Glens Falls, NY where he attended the Adirondack Repertory Dance Theatre under the direction of Pamara Perry. While staying local, he attended the New York State Summer School for the Arts ballet program for 6 years under the wing of Olga Kostritsky and Damien Woetzel. In 2002 Stephen was accepted on scholarship to attend the School of American Ballet, the official school of the New York City Ballet. There he was trained by the likes of Peter Martins, Peter Boal, Nikolai Hubbe, Violette Verdy, and Sean Lavery. In the summer of 2004 Stephen was accepted as a student at the Miami City Ballet School summer intensive where he had the opportunity to perform the principal role in George Balanchine’s ‘Theme and Variations’. Stephen was subsequently asked, by artistic director Edward Villela, to join the company as an apprentice. From 2004 to 2011 Stephen had a vast experience of performing masterworks from George Balanchine, Jerome Robbins, Twyla Tharp, John Kranko, Anthony Tudor, and Trey McIntyre, both in Miami and on tour across the United States.
In 2011 Stephen made a move to Canada to join Les Grands Ballets Canadiens in Montreal, and was promoted to the rank of soloist after 3 years in the company. There he had the opportunity to perform masterworks by choreographers like Jean-Christoph Maillot, Mats Ek, Jiri Kylian, Ohad Naharin, Stephan Thoss and many other works under the neoclassical and contemporary genres. While with Les Grands, Stephen was taken on the road often and has made his mark in theaters throughout France, Spain, Germany, Israel, China, Serbia, and Macedonia, as well as national tours throughout Canada.
Throughout his professional career Stephen has also taken on roles as a teacher, choreographer, and ballet master. Starting out as a teacher under Daniel Ulbrecht at the NYSSSA program, then moving on to teach at the Los Gatos Ballet in California, and finally teaching and ballet mastering in Montreal for Les Grands. Stephen’s work as a choreographer began in Miami City Ballet, where he created a piece for the dancers choreographic workshop, and has continued to progress with the two pieces he has created on the dancers for ‘A Suivre’ at Les Grands Ballets.
